How to Use the ROAS Calculator
- Enter the revenue attributed to your ads for a set period.
- Enter what you spent on the ad platform over the same period.
- Read your ROAS as a multiple, a percentage, and revenue per $1.
Use the attribution figures from the platform you are measuring, such as Google Ads or Meta Ads Manager, or from your analytics tool if you trust its attribution more. Mixing sources is the most common reason ROAS numbers look wrong, because each platform tends to credit itself generously.
The ROAS Formula
ROAS = revenue from ads ÷ ad spend
Suppose a campaign spent $3,000 and generated $12,000 in tracked sales. $12,000 ÷ $3,000 = 4, so the ROAS is 4x, also written as 4:1 or 400%. Every dollar of ad spend brought back $4 in revenue.
ROAS vs ROI
The two are often confused. Return on ad spend only compares revenue with ad spend. Return on investment (ROI) subtracts every cost, including the cost of the product, staff time, and agency fees, then compares the profit with the money invested. A 4x ROAS can still lose money if your margins are thin, which is why ROAS should always be read against your break-even point.
What Is a Good ROAS?
There is no single good number, because it depends on margins. A business that keeps 60% of each sale as profit before advertising breaks even at a much lower ROAS than one that keeps 20%. A 4x ROAS is often quoted as a healthy target, but the only reliable benchmark is your own break-even ROAS, which is your price divided by the profit margin on each sale. If your margin before ad spend is 40%, you break even at 2.5x, and anything above that is profit.
- Below 1x: the campaign brought in less revenue than it cost.
- Between 1x and break-even: revenue covers ad spend but not product and delivery costs.
- Above break-even: the campaign is profitable on each sale.
How to Improve ROAS
- Shift budget toward the campaigns, keywords, and audiences with the highest ROAS.
- Raise average order value with bundles or add-ons.
- Improve the landing page so more clicks turn into sales, which you can measure with the conversion rate calculator.
- Exclude audiences and search terms that spend without converting.
Faster answers on the landing page help too. When visitors can ask about delivery, sizing, or availability and get an instant reply, fewer of the clicks you paid for go to waste. A chatbot that answers from your own pages is one way to do that, as the AI Chatbot features page shows.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is blended ROAS?
Blended ROAS, sometimes called marketing efficiency ratio (MER), divides total revenue by total ad spend across every channel. It sidesteps attribution arguments between platforms and gives you one number for the whole business, which is useful when several channels claim credit for the same sale.
Why does ROAS differ between Google Ads and my analytics?
Each tool uses its own attribution model and conversion window. An ad platform may credit a sale to an ad clicked weeks earlier, while analytics may credit the last channel before purchase. Pick one source for decisions and stick with it.
